How To Transform Your Garden into a Luxury Outdoor Kitchen Oasis
7th May 2026How to choose a weather-proof, luxury stone surface that creates a seamless flow from your home to your garden.
Outdoor cooking and entertaining have evolved over the last few years from simply a BBQ in a small corner of the garden to a complete alfresco kitchen experience. At HSS Stone, we have seen a significant rise in the demand for outdoor kitchens and bars since the 2020 pandemic, and quite frankly, we don’t see them going anywhere, anytime soon. By bringing the ‘indoors, outdoors’ you can conjure up an oasis of relaxation. Outdoor kitchens also make the perfect social spots to enjoy quality time with family and friends.
Naturally, stone worktops are always going to be the best choice for your outdoor kitchen. However, unlike interior kitchens, outdoor surfaces have to deal with much, much more and often take much more of a kicking. Like months of freezing winter temperatures and unpredictable elements for example. On the other end of the spectrum, you've got strong UV rays and high temperatures in the summertime. And of course, let’s not forget a typical British downpour which as we all know only too well, doesn’t always us give much warning.
These reasons alone make it important to consider your surfaces’ stone carefully. So if you are considering an outdoor kitchen or bar space in time for the upcoming BBQ season, here is all the advice you need to getting it right straight off the bat.
The Quartz Conflict: "Indoor" Stones Should Stay Inside
Quartz is one of our most popular materials for interior kitchens, but it is usually best kept indoors. That’s not to say you can’t opt for quartz outside at all, but it does depend entirely on your set-up. For example, if it is used for an outdoor kitchen without any cover it will likely not last as well. Quartz is susceptible to yellowing or discolouration when exposed to direct UV rays, so a Quartz surface outdoors will certainly take more hits from UV rays than if it were indoors.
If your set-up is under a shelter, or even in a closed or semi-open garden room, it could work. However, to keep your outdoor space looking high-end and without the unnecessary worry, Natural Granite is often a much better option.
Why Natural Granite?
Natural Granite has proven to be a hardworking stone time and time again. After-all it quite literally comes from the Earth, so a garden in the UK should be no problem. Granite is formed when Igneous rocks that have been exposed to natural pressure and heat over millions of years are extracted directly from mountainsides. This makes them naturally weather-proof by design and will offer your garden space a long-term investment that stays looking stunning for years to come.
Some of the reasons why Natural Granite is perfect for your garden kitchen space include:
- It is UV Resistance: Natural granite will not fade or lose its lustre, when exposed to those strong UV rays, even in a sun-drenched, south-facing garden.
- Its Heat Proof: You can absolutely set hot BBQ tools directly on the stone without fear of damage. Likewise, those extra hot days we sometimes get won’t wreak havoc with the stone either.
- A Timeless Aesthetic: If you are looking to create a beautifully natural aesthetic then look no further. Natural granite does that in abundance. It blends perfectly with natural landscaping and stone patios too, making it a fab design choice.
Creating the "Indoor-Outdoor" Flow
One of the best things about building an outdoor kitchen oasis is being able to create that effortless flow between the inside and outside. By choosing a stone for your garden that complements your inside kitchen, you get that visual bridge between your interior and exterior spaces, which naturally gives that seamless transition. You then get double the living area and a perfect ‘party-ready’ space that will wow your guests.
That being said, colour also matters. A dark stone in direct sunlight and without cover for example will absorb much more heat on a hot summer’s day, making it uncomfortable to the touch. And no one wants to burn their hands on their worktop!
If your outdoor kitchen isn't under a permanent cover or is exposed to a lot of sun, (i.e in a south facing garden) it’s a good idea to opt for lighter granite stones like 'River White'. This keeps your 'oasis' practical and cool, even during those few warmer days of summer we get.
